Across HawaiÊ»i, suicide is one of the leading causes of death for teenagers and young adults. Many teens struggle with anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. And in the years following the Maui fires, many local families — especially our youth — are still carrying stress, grief, and uncertainty about the future.

For teenagers, these challenges can be difficult to talk about. Many don’t know where to go for help, or they feel uncomfortable reaching out in traditional settings.

That’s why creating spaces where young people feel safe, supported, and connected is so important.

A Different Approach: Connection First

One of the most powerful ways to support mental health is through community and connection.

When teens feel seen, heard, and surrounded by people who care, it can make a tremendous difference in their lives. Sometimes what a young person needs most isn’t a lecture or a program — it’s simply a place where they feel like they belong.

That belief is what inspired Maui Flow Fest, the largest youth mental health event in the State of Hawaiʻi.

Flow Fest brings together high school students from across Maui for a night of music, food, games, and connection with organizations that support teen mental health. From the outside, it looks like a celebration — and it is.

But behind the scenes, it creates opportunities for young people to connect with resources, mentors, and organizations that can help them navigate life’s challenges.
